Permit Free Training Visa

What is a Post Graduate permit-free training visa?

Within the British Immigration rules and regulations (Immigration Act 1971, section 70), a person has a claim to a permit-free training visa if they can prove that they:
  • Are a graduate from a UK medical school intending to undertake Pre-Registration House Officer employment for up to 12 months, as required for full registration from the GMC (General Medical Council) or GDC (General Dental Council).
  • Are eligible for provisional or limited registration with the GMC
  • Have spent no more than 12 months in aggregate in Pre-Registration House Officer employment
  • Are a doctor/dentist eligible for full or limited registration with the GMC or GDC who undertakes to have postgraduate training in a hospital or the Community Health Services or both
  • Have not spent 4 years in postgraduate training in the UK (excluding the 12 months of working as a house officer)
  • Intend to leave the UK on completion of his\her training period
  • Will be able to maintain and accommodate themselves and any dependents without recourse to public funds
Note that if you do not fall within these rules, you cannot apply for this visa. Since you have decided to migrate to the UK, possibly permanently, the British Immigration Service has every intention to ensure that you are eligible and to confirm you have sufficient funds to support yourself and that your intention is to gain employment. Ultimately, the objective is to show that you will be conducive to the public good.

How long is a permit-free training visa valid?

You need to enter the UK within six months from the date that your entry clearance visa has been granted. The Permit-free visa would be granted for a 1-year period on arrival that can be extended in the UK for a further 3 years.
