Retired Person of Independent Visa

Who qualifies for a Retired Person of Independent Visa?
Within the British Immigration rules and regulations (Immigration Act 1971,section 263), a person is eligible for this visa if s/he can prove that s/he:
  • Is at least 60 years old
  • Has under his/her control and disposable in the UK an income of at least 25 000 pounds per annum
  • Will be able to accommodate themselves and any dependants indefinitely in the UK from his/her own resources with no assistance from any other person and without taking employment or having resources to public funds
  • Can demonstrate a close connection with the UK
  • Intends to make the UK his/her main home
  • Holds a valid UK entry clearance
Note that if you do not fall within these rules, you cannot apply for this visa. Since you have decided to migrate to the UK, possibly permanently, the British Immigration Service has every intention to ensure that you are eligible and to confirm you have sufficient funds to support yourself and that your intention is to gain employment. Ultimately, the objective is to show that you will be conducive to the public good.

How long is the Retired person of independent visa valid?

You need to enter the UK within 6 months after being issued the visa. The visa is valid for four years. One month before this visa expires, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain as long as you haven't spent ninety days or more out of the UK at a time. After residing on Indefinite Leave to Remain for two years, you are eligible to apply for a British passport.
