Dependancy
What is a dependancy visa?
Within the British Immigration rules and regulations (Immigration Act 1971 section 8), a person has a claim to be a dependant if they can prove that they are:
-
A Spouse that is legally married to a person present and
settled in the UK
-
A Dependent of a person who has UK Ancestry
-
A Dependant of a person who has a valid work permit issued
by the DFEE in the UK
Note that if you do not fall within these rules, you cannot
apply for this visa. Since you have decided to migrate to the UK, possibly permanently,
the British Immigration Service has every intention to ensure that you are eligible
and to confirm you have sufficient funds to support yourself and that your intention
is to gain employment. Ultimately, the objective is to show that you will be
conducive to the public good.
How long is a Dependency Visa valid?
The Dependency visa is granted for the same duration as the main claim
holder’s visa. After four years on a Dependency visa, you can apply for
your next visa called Indefinite Leave to Remain as long as you haven’t
spent a period of 90 days or more away from the UK. After holding the Indefinite
Leave to Remain visa for two years, you are eligible to apply for a British
Passport.
